You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.
And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart.
You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.
You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes.
You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

Assumptions

Today, I was leaving the grocery store.  It was hot.  Like 110 or so.  I had 2 hot and thirsty kids with me, plus our cart full of groceries.  As I was loading the kids and the groceries into the car, I was approached by a woman.  I saw her out of the corner of my eye, and looked up.  She said "hi.  if you ever need a break, call me.  you're obviously a foster parent.  I run a day care right here in the neighborhood."  As she handed me a card for her day care business.

Who picks a child care provider from a cold contact handing them a biz card in a grocery store parking lot?  I suppose people do.    But. not. me.

So I was relegated to the "obviously a foster mom" category because my kids don't have the same color skin as me.

hmmm.  Maybe if it wasn't scorching hot outside I could have educated her a bit.

  1. I appreciate self promotion as a means to increase revenue flow...but I'm pretty sure introducing yourself and your business would have been enough in this case...WHY oh WHY would she just look and judge...how narrow.

And so if she assumed that they were your foster kids then what...it makes you more likely to had off your "unofficial" kids to a parking lot stranger for care??? hmm

  2. I haven't gotten that one yet, but I'll be sure to add it to the list of possibilities. Ugh.

  3. Interesting.....maybe she's desperate for money or the obvious very naive. I've never had anyone approach me with questions or assumptions. I've read many stories of other adoptive parents that have had some pretty strange comments from strangers. I have had a few stares.

One thing I've learned over all these years of raising my bio kids and Nicolas famiies come in lots of different packages....with lots of different wrapping :)

  4. I have had the "foster kid" question. People question me all of the time. I usually just smile and say, "No, he is mine!"
